A little about St Albans
St Albans in television and film
St Albans has a very diverse mix of architecture that lends itself perfectly
to television and film production. Also its proximity to London have made it
a popular filming location.
The Abbey and Fishpool Street areas were used for the pilot episode of the 1960s
ecclesiastical TV comedy All Gas and Gaiters. The area of Romeland, directly north
of the Abbey Gateway and the walls of the Abbey and school grounds, can be seen
masquerading as part of an Oxford college in some episodes of Inspector Morse and
several local pubs also appear in certain episodes. In fact the Morse filming crew
frequently set up shoots in and around St Albans for many of the shows episodes.
Fishpool Street, running from Romeland to St Michaels village, stood in for Hastings
in some episodes of Foyles War. Life Begins was filmed largely in and around St Albans.
The Lady Chapel in the Abbey itself was used as a location for at least one scene in

The Abbey itself is also used by the University of Hertfordshire as a favoured venue for

Not only does the University of Hertfordshire use the Abbey for graduation ceremonies,
they used to have their law faculty just off of St Peters Street at the centre of the town.
Although the faculty has now moved to a new location in Hatfield, the University has
